I haven’t done anything quite this bad since I got off the drugs and quit drinking.  Stray animal, adopted on an absolute impulse.  Saw it, told the man I’d take it, went to the bank, got him his money, put it on the truck and led it home.  The motor sounds like someone shaking a coffee can full of nuts and bolts.  The clutch takes two hands to pull in, it has no front brake, and it leaks oil and gasoline from every possible orifice.  It is–in a word–perfect.  Read the rest of this entry »

This week’s act of simple, selfless, charity involves riding somebody else’s bike.  You would be correct in assuming that an employee of a bike shop gets to ride many bikes, belonging to a great many people, all the time.  Where I work, the Service writer, the mechanics (obviously), and sometimes even the Parts manager–due to his exalted status as an absolute loon on an ATV–all end up riding bikes that are not their own.  As the ringleader–try as I may to avoid it–I get to ride the most.  I don’t know why.  I look responsible, probably, and people figure that if something goes awry, I will just get them another bike.  Thank god we’ve yet to put that one to the test.  Read the rest of this entry »

fantastic, as usual..

One of my (and I am by no means alone) favorite weekly stops has been the Boston Globe’s Big Picture.  It is not where you’d expect to find a knuckle-dragging grobian such as myself, but hey, I like pretty pictures.  Imagine my delight when I went there today and the photos were of last weekend’s MotoGP racing in Australia.  The color, motion, and mayhem that is GP racing, captured perfectly.  Check it out!
